I always adored this cover. Check out the little ident box at top-right, with miserable Magneto and Warlock - this was probably one of the first times I really registered a comic book screwing with the corporate identity bits of the cover like that.
I think 86 must have been the year when I really started thinking of comics as a designed, created object - which sounds daft, but I would have only been 13. Of course I knew they were drawn and written, but with covers like this, which messed with areas of the book that I might have previously thought were predetermined and untouchable - including painting over the team logo! - along with the totally beautiful commemorative covers Marvel did for their 25th anniversary, I was starting to realise quite how much creative freedom was possible in the form.
I guess most people started coming to that realisation in more experimental places like Drawn & Quarterly, or books that were better known critically, like Frank Miller’s work on Daredevil and Batman, but for me the crazy stuff that happened in The New Mutants, as well as those early issues that would have introduced me to Bill Sienkiewicz, totally opened my eyes to what the medium could be.
